Fillling the basket and encounter with sorceress

The future young father is climbing over the wall - to satisfy the hunger

of his pregnant woman - the basket is still empty

I stitched the basket on a background and cut it out

Sorceress came to her garden - flowers and salad everywhere

I added a train of lace fixed with French knots on her sleeve

Next thing was to add a little book - really little - three pages

with pattern from the story -

The adventure will go on - the young man was allowed to fill his basket

as full as he could - but the price was high......

This is ....

.... how a fabric basket comes to being. I used only batiks.

The strips are sewn onto to lining. 40 strips all together.

 

It is gathered at the bottom and stuffed circles (16 cm) are sewn to

it from inside and outside. By hand because I can't reach it by

machine.

 

 

We are in France.....

And now look what this rainy and snow melting season

brings to us.

You know from my photos of last year's innondation

This is all cow meadows. Far away on the horizon the mountain

range of the Vosges can be seen.

So entsteht ein "Marktkorb" - 40 Streifen, die man während

des Aufnähens auf das Futter ausstopft, werden anschliessend

unten auf einen kleinen Durchmesser eingereiht. Auf die Öffnung

kommen innen und aussen zwei verstärkte Stoffkreise, von Hand.

Und das bringt uns die Regen- und Schneeschmelze-Saison:

Überschwemmte Kuhweiden - in der Ferne am Horizont

sieht man die Vogesen - ja, wir sind wieder in Frankreich.

Bag in tree - and holes - lacy holes again

I got the pattern of my friends - they got it from their friends

And those friends got it from somewhere else....

So this is my fabric made market basket.

It is large like an African basket made of something like straw

which are very popular -

I own at least three - and this seems not to be enough so I made

one of fabric strips, not because I want another basket but because

"the journey is the reward" - der Weg ist das Ziel. It is all about the making.

 

I have enough stuff to fill it, for instance with fabric scraps or other ..

but not market products, certainly not potatoes. It would hang through.

(This might be a very German expression... if somebody would

correct me.....it would be fine)

 

 

And here the embellshment - a very strange flower - I will just

leave it there till I make a better one.

 

Apart from basket making I am making "lace" - by machine -

appliqueing old lace which I cut off from an very old pillow cover.

My lace can look like that, too, very delicate.

You know that I am in a class of Karen Ruane "Swathed in Stitch".

 

And for the cross stitches I have to make decisions - always assisted

by the already well-known Bird peeping across my shoulder -

more exactly lying about on my table offering clever advices.

 

Trying out how large the letter will be

still without fabric underneeth - what a crazy idea.

My next letter will be an "L" for lace.

I will keep my needle in motion.....

It is a wrap - again

The clothesline is 6 mm thick

and it showed that I could not sew it with my machine. So I unravelled all 15 m resulting in this bunch:

and changed to a thinner more flexible line which DH had in his very large bag for cords. When we travel to the renovation house we have always many things in our trailor which have to be fixed with thousands of meters of strong poly-propylene cord.

Flat like a stamp for the bottom.

Then it has to be bent

towards the machine

This machine is about 60 years old, it is like an elephant and regularly fed with a drop of tasty (for the machine!) oil...

After a lot of turns it resulted in this.

 

 

The finished basket. I embellished it with perle 5 in blue and made French knots in the first ditch.

It is strong and firm and I am very satisfied.

I added a few beads, not too many, just to hide a not so good ending.
I thought also to make some embroidery stitches - but I leave it now
as it is.
 

There is always a tapered end which has to be concealed -
the ideal reason to sew on beads

As this is  a post on finished baskets I will add the blue one

 

 

I used a wonderful fabric designed by Caryl Bryer-Fallert

I bought it years ago in her studio in Paducah, KY
I added a few narrow strips of orange for interest 

 

 

 

I finished it off with a double binding

as described by Susan Breier in her book It's a Wrap II

I tried to make the bowl oblong though it did not really

come out like that. But it is ok.

 

 

 

 

Basket

I bought this beautiful book two years ago
and felt it was time to finally try the very good explanations.

 

This basket on the title page is still too complicated for me.

Mine will be easier to make.
I use about 6 m of clothesline and thin red cotton
and start to wrap.
My strips are about 1/2" wide.

I am wrapping and wrapping

and then I am starting to coil very firmly.
Then I sew the cross in the middle with straight stitches
to hold it together -
and I am going on with zig-zag stitches to join the coil
round and round till I feel that it is big enough or the end
of the wrapped clothesline arrived at my sewing machine.

And here is my little red basket with blue-green stripes for more
interest. 

I will give it to a good friend.
But I will still embellish it with beads - and show it in a future post.
